President’s Message : 2016 – 2017 Season
Welcome to the 2016-17 season of the Guitar Society of Toronto!
Looking back at the season that’s just come to a close, I feel very proud of how we celebrated our society’s first 60 years, and very positive about the strides we’re making toward our future.
The 2016-17 season opens September 17 with a concert by the superb Cuban virtuoso Iliana Matos. We continue throughout the year with many exciting international artists coming to perform for us. This year we will add a new dimension to our concert program, bringing you some outstanding duos and trios, as well as presenting guitar in combination with other instruments.
April will feature a return of our very popular Toronto Guitar Weekend – a wonderful opportunity to spend a few days of total immersion in guitar! This year we are proud to bring you performances by the brilliant Eden Stell Duo from Britain, as well as competition winners Bokyung Byun and Alec Holcomb. The luthier fair will be back for the third year, and there will be lectures, a master class and open mic performance opportunities, as well as the tremendously popular brunch with the artists.
Again this year we will bring classical guitar to schools through our outreach concerts, and support outstanding local guitar students by way of the President’s Bursary. Our community guitar orchestra will offer guitarists of all ages and levels an opportunity to learn and perform in an ensemble setting, and our Café Concert series is an opportunity to listen or perform in a relaxed atmosphere with friends. Information about all of these can be found on our web site.
As you know, we are a not-for-profit organization, and depend on the generous support of our donors, sponsors and volunteers. We are so grateful; we could not do what we do without them!
I am honoured to hold the position of president of this venerable organization, one of the oldest and most respected guitar societies in the world. I hope you will consider becoming involved, as a member, donor, or volunteer. Check out the Membership and Donor information on the web site, and don’t hesitate to contact us – we want to hear from you!
Let’s make this season another one to remember!
